the drive ?

No, it's some other problem.

However, some have reported that SP2 screwed up their USB,
so it that's the external's interface, you might need to
look into that angle (offhand I have no suggestions, you
didn't mention the hardware and this is a hardware group).

Just to rule things out, have you tried the external drive hooked up
to
another computer? Everything works?
What model Toshiba Satellite is it?

No, don’t have another computer in the casa. I’m downloading service
pack 4 and have just finished partitioning the drive. I grow weary and
fear if this doesn’t work I may commit hara krishna (sp?)

Like a nagging wife,

Because I’m not sure how old the laptop is I would make one of the
partitions, I don’t know, say 40G...Just to rule out any chance that
the
BIOS can’t read 100G either?
If you installed SP2 over the top of a lot of software utilities
it’s not
impossible for things not to be perfect?

It’s XP, I get auto updates and they are current. I taked w/the

setting in hardware, device manager, Universal serial bus controllers;
Power management: uncheck box(es) allowing for power to be shut off on
a port....no luck. Nothing I am finding in the BIOS screens pertains
to this problem. I am open to any and all suggestions! The 80gb I have
been using for awhile works fine, the 320gb (by the same compant just
won’t stay recognized after hybernation.
