my maxtor 120gb 7200RPM IDE HDD has suddenly got quite a high pitched noise
that starts as soon as the pc is turned on, i've had the PC (asus pundit -
P4 2.6Ghz, 512mb ram, 120gb hdd, dvdrw) for 2 months and this problem ha
sonly come on in the past week.
there are no noticeable problems with the way the PC runs, its not slower or
having trouble accessing anything. There's no virus as I have checked and
everything inside the PC seemed to be plugged in correctly no mising wires
or signs of distress inside.
any ideas why the hard drive would suddenly start getting louder?
any help guidance would be great.

are you 100% it's the drive and not a cooling fan ie cpu, power supply or
graphics card etc.

Likely the bearing is shot. After backing up the data, run Maxtor's
diagnostics "Powermax" available for download from website if not included
in the drive package. Get RMA from Maxtor and if possible you might get
an advance replacement sent so you can transfer data from current drive to
new one, providing drive doesn't fail within a few days... if possible use
the drive, have it powered on as little as possible after running
diagnostics.

Most likely the bearings are failing. Maxtor's have a high failure rate. I
would back up my data immediately.

I wanted to get a 2nd opinion from maxtor so I searched for model id and
could not find it on the website where i bought it, or my receipt so I
opened up my PC to find that the HDD is in fact a Western Digital WD1200
(S/N WD1200BB - 00DWA00) after seeing this I decided to put the HDD back in
(exactly the same as before) in order to get on the net and alert my
supplier to this error, however the pc doesn't not now recognise the HDD at
all and subsequently won't boot up.
