I believe the Seagate has fluid bearings and is the quietest. I believe the
WD is more rugged.

I've got the Samsung SpinPoint. Runs totally silent. Great drive. I
replaced a Maxtor that was supposed to be silent. Couldn't hear any seek
noise out of the Maxtor, but it had an annoying high pitched whine that
drove me nuts. The Samsung doesn't make any noise at all.

I've got a 60Gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and it's pretty noisey. My
computer has got Zalman components etc. but the HD is probably the
noisiest component. I wish I had got a Seagate Barracuda. I'm
thinking about getting a Barracuda 120Gb to replace it now and want to
build another (even quieter) machine with a small Barracuda.

I'm surprised to read of your impression of your Maxtor.
I, also, have two 60GB (and two 120GB) Maxtor
DiamondMax Plus 9s (all with 8MB buffers), and I'm
impressed with how quiet they are. You may have a "lemon"
or your PC is *really* quiet. In *my* PC, the sound of the
two HDs are discernible when seeking, but the noisiest feature
is the sound of air rushing out the back of the case.

OK but just bought a couple of Samsung are they are almost silent, a lot
quieter the WD or Seagate IMO, good luck with your choice.
