- partition magic OS partition problem
- Posted by Christo on December 8th, 2004
did a fresh install of windows XP home with sp2 slipstreamed
had problems installing flat on 80gb maxtor ATA133 hdd
anyhow second time round i partitioned off 3 GB
installed it in there works cool
i then used partition magic to create a partition on the rest of my drive
i now want to extend the original 3 gb partition to about 10 GB
however when i take it past 8 gb i get a problem like this....
resizing or moving an operating system parition beyond the 1024 cylinder
boundary may make the computer unbootable, due to INT13 BIOS limitations on
some machines, your rescue diskettes may not be able to recover from this
situation
blah blah blah
do you want to continue?
my machine is pretty new (msi ky6v athlon 2600+ etc etc self built)
is this something to do with old bios? and will it be ok to do it on my
system?
if no one can give me an answer links to relevant topics on the net would be
appreciated

Shouldn't be an issue with your machine. Any BIOS that can
deal with an 80 GB drive will be just fine. If you're using FAT32
then going from below 8 GB to over that will increase the cluster size
and waste
space. Therefore lots of people stay at 8 GB or just ignore the issue
and go
for a large partition.

Some OSs (most notably WinNT) will not load boot files that are beyond 1024 cylinders. This limitation does not exist with WinXP.

What version of Partition Magic do you have? You need to use v8
for XP's flavour of NTFS.

I'm almost certain that it'll work just fine. That PM 'error' message is
really just for info. and would only come into play if you wanted to
dual-boot. As it's a fresh install you can always start over, so go for it.

Do you have the 8.01 patch + the 1513 or something patch. The original 8.0
version I found tended to stuff up all the time. If you've got 8.02 or 8.05
then you're set.
