I can hear a high screeching sound, when i click the on button nothing
happens, the fan does not go on either.
I am hoping its a power supply fault and not the mobo, its a Antec
SmartPower 2.0 350 Watt ATX12V PSU which is not even a year old. The
last couple of days when it was working I had to reload the onboard
network driver quite often as it would just loose connection to the
internet.
Other computers on the same network were and are sill working fine.

I just hope its the power supply ? is screeching , static type sound
symptons of a faulty fan or motheboard?

with a motherboard thats shorting the power supply output
so the power suppy shuts down. It wont be the fan if it isnt
rotating, it needs to be rotating to get bearing noise.

My son had a similar problem a few weeks ago -- computer dead
and power supply making a high pitched sound. His PSU was the
Antec SmartPower 450 watt. Our theory was that it had been zapped
by a power surge. Could that have happened to yours? If, so you might
also consider replacing your surge protector (If you don't have one, buy
one!!), as they only protect against a limited number of surges. Anyway,
my son replaced his PSU with an Antec SmartPower 350, and his
computer worked fine. Personally, I favor Seasonic power supplies and
would recommend one of those. You might also consider an Antec
TruePower.

As its under 1 year , the shop where i bought it from should replace it
for no fee, if not i will look into Seasonic power supplies or the

Unplug the PSU from the motherboard and everything else. If
you have an old worthless HDD, plug the PSU into that
(only), temporarily. Now plug the AC cord back in, does it
make the noise? If so, you've ruled out the motherboard.
If not, short the PS-on line (Pin 14, usually a green wire)
to ground to turn on the PSU. The old/worthless HDD should
now be spinning, PSU turned on and fan spinning too. Take
voltage readings if you have a multimeter.

If not, inspect the board, and disconnect all components
non-essential towards getting it to post. Pull out cards,
leaving only 1 memory module, CPU + heatsink/fan, and video.
Clear CMOS then plug AC back in and try to start system.


It seems to be the power supply, but do the other things
mentioned above to try and isolate it more.

I got it back today from the shop it was just a faulty psu, its funny
how it only lasted 8 months and i have a p3 beside me thats 6 years old
and the psu has never been changed..

my brothers psu went on his last year , also it was just 1 year or so.

Both psu's are powering amd64 box's if thats any correlation..........
