So does ordinary home use include gaming? What do you want for your $1000?
Printer? Scanner? Monitor? Windows XP? If not, you could build your own
with a very simple graphics card, and then put Linux on it.

You can get one way cheaper than that. Even a Athlon 1000 can do that
stuff. Im using one now as my second PC and I hadnt used it alot in a
while but was forced to when my athlon 64 parts took forever to buy.
I had to use it for over a month up until a few weeks ago and surfing
the net etc no problems. If you got a sempron 2000-3000 system for a
few hunded it would be good enough for that. And anything else youd
probably want to do.

If you want a bit better system some Pent 4 and AMD 64 lower end
systems were on sale recently at Office Depot and Compusa the last few
weeks - you missed the sales but they were going on for a month or
more. Every once in a while they may take a break on good deals and
you ll have to wait but sometimes they keep the good sales going every
week for while. Check this weekends (sundays) paper.

Also check DELL to see what deals they have this week. Every once in a
while theyll have a killer deal but overall their deals arent that
bad. The really low end ones tend to have 17" CRTs with them but
that doesnt matter if you already have one.

FRYs also often has killer deals. If you pay more than 200-300 it
better be a pretty decent PC. You can routinely get an AMD 64 2800 754
socket and board at FRYs for around 200 (no case and memory). Another
100-150 would get you a case and mem 512 megs. And another 70 a Dvd
burner and floppy. Another 40-60 a hard disk.
