Unreliable cd writing
Posted by Koot on August 10th, 2005

Is it just me, or are all cd writers unreliable? I have two computers with
different cd writers, but both seem to have problems with "calibration
voltage" or something and can not "perform fixation". I have tried writing
at lower speeds, but it doesn't help.

Is there an FAQ that I can browse through, or is there a simple fix to the
problem? It is deeply irritating and expensive, since the cd's are wasted
after this exercise.

It would help to know what the drives were, and what kind of media and
software you are using.

It sounds like your drives are not compatible with the media you are using.

The one drive is a AOPEN CD-RW (CRW4852) and the other is a SAMSUNG. The
common denominator is the NERO 5 Burning ROM program. The media are
off-the-shelf Verbatim 48x 700MB disks. Sometimes they work, sometimes not,
so there shouldn't be an incompatibility issue.

(Power calibration error, Could not perform fixation) is typically
caused by drive/media mismatch. Try different disc brand and burn at
slower speed, like 16x.

If you have WMP, disable the burn plugin.

If you are on winxp, disable IMAPI:
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, double-click "IMAPI CD
Burning", click Stop, then set "Startup type" as "Disabled".

Update firmwares.
Update Nero.
Check the drives are in DMA.
