UPS Cable

Anyone know the connections on a PC to APC Smart-UPS 700, I've just been
given one and I'd rather make my own than spend out £25+ for one from APC,
Looking at their site it's a 9 PIN D to 9 PIN D but unfortunately they don't
tell you what pin connects to what pin, I wonder why?? LOL :0)

I have the identical UPS and have answered this question before. After
doing some searching I located an old post and this is the gist of it:

Female 2 ----------> Male 2
Female 3 ----------> Male 1
Female 5 ----------> Male 9

All other pins are disconnected and there appear to be no jumpers between
any of the pins and the female or male ends.

I know less than nothing about any UPS cable .... but it does twig my
curiosity when the same respondent first says that "you can't make your
own. They are top secret." and then, when someone posts pinouts, he
follows up with "electronic components are included in the cable".

I suppose he could be referring to wires and insulation as electronic
components?

If I had a cable, I would be taking measurements for all possible pin
combinations right about now .... just to satisfy my curiosity.
(Measurements would include resistance, diode check, inductance,
capacitance, and maybe a few others depending on what the first ones
revealed.)
Be careful if you try this though. Some meters use up to 9V for some
tests and that can fry some low voltage components ... if there are any.

Did the pinout I gave you not work? If so I apologize -- had never
considered the possibility of components in the cable. Guess I could go back
and do some more probing to look for items like diodes and resistors (I
don't have the equipment required to detect smallish capacitors).

I been there. I had some problems to get my UPS to communicate
with my computer. The cable attached to my APC UPS was an USB cable,
but that didn't work. Instead I tried to connect to the COM-port
because the UPS had that possibility to, but I couldn't get it working
with my own homemade cable.
I called the APC support and they told me that the cable include some
electronic komponents. They send me the right serial cable for free!
