USB 2 Hubs
Posted by mansfield.andrew@gmail.com on March 4th, 2007

Hello all:

I have about ten USB 2 drives hooked up to a computer that does a lot
of work with video.

Are there really any differences in USB 2 hubs? If I have disk
access
to several drives going on through a hub things slow up. Is there a
hardware solution to "switch" bandwith better through certain brands
of USB 2 hubs? I'm willing to pay a lot more to get several good
hubs . . .

Any help is appreciated.

Yuck. Just don't, that's a horrible configuration, quite
slow due to USB2's low performance in general and that you
have them on hubs so the throughput is shared.

Some hubs might be better, but it's more a matter of trivia,
the problem is still going to be that it's USB2 at all,
though if you must use USB2, do so without more than one
drive per motherboard hub (USB port pair) that will be
accessed simultaneously. To do that you will need to add
one or more PCI (or PCI Express, if there are any) USB cards
to the system.

If the drives (enclosures) support Firewire, it may be a
little faster, but if you're doing a lot of work with these
you ought to think about replacing the drives with eSATA
equivalents, and of course eSATA capable PCI, PCI Express
cards.
