I'm thinking of making my own video projector using a flat LCD laptop
screen. It would be built using the same sort of technology which is in a
overhead projector. Would it be possible to use an old laptop screen and
shine a bright light through the back of it?

but the OP mentioned shining the light *through* the lcd screen...
that's why i said i cannot imagine how it could work
