Wierd problem

I purchased an eMachine a few years back. Big mistake. Anyway, after a
few hours of use it decided that there was no mouse or keyboard.
Occasionally it would find them, but usually it would not. I tried
using a USB to PS/2 adapter thinking the PS/2 adapter on the motherboard
had gone out, but that did not help, it seemed that the USB must be out
as well. So I put in a card to take the mouse and keyboard, and that did
not work either. I took it back to Best Buy where I had purchased it and
they said that it was the motherboard, and would cost about $500 for a
new motherboard. I found one on the net for about $25, and ordered it.
It is exactly the same motherboard, so I swapped motherboards, and put
the RAM on the old one on the new one.

When I try to boot it says that the CMOS is invalid, which is expected
since I changed the amount of memory. But it says to press F1 or F2,
and when I do, the keyboard is still dead! It flashes on power up, but
the lights will not come on after the initial flash. So apparently the
keyboard and mouse are still dead, even with the new motherboard, but I
can't think of anything else that could be common between them, unless
it is one of the power lines from the power supply.

Anyone have any ideas?

Marshall

Have you tried...

- Different keyboard?
- Different mouse?
- Don't plug in mouse - is keyboard OK?
- Swap out PSU.
- Looked for a short circuit between mainboard and case?

A USB can be used in DOS, but only if "Legacy USB Support" is enabled (may
say "USB Legacy Support") or support for USB keyboards is an option and
enabled.
