- Is Anonymizing software worth it?
- Posted by Paul Schofield on August 29th, 2004
Does anyone have any views on anonymizing software?
I've tried various different ones. They either seem to block access to
genuine functions eg Windows Update, or just not work.
I've tested a few programs with web sites that tell you you're IP address.
Some of them get it wrong but some still get it right, even when I'm
apparently anonymized.
Surely your IP address must still be visible in some way for your computer
to work on the Internet.
Does anyway else think its a waste of time?

Thanks for the advice. I've just got broadband and I'm spending a bit more
time on-line than I used to.
It makes me wonder how the ones who download mp3s, movie etc. don't get
caught. I'd have thought the ISP would have noticed things like that.

Hello,
no one cares! one isp i used hosted websites for police, but their news
servers allowed child porn groups. It would be a job to catch people as
everyone downloads.
I would buy DVDs and music CDs and software if the price was sensible. The
higher it goes, the less people buy it.
Company greed causes a lot of it.
If you don't want to have people knowing which sites you look at then use a
proxy server.

you IP addy gets logged. that info can be requested by law enforcement. you
only have to worry if you are trading &/or selling gigs and gigs of music
&/or movies. but - don't be so paranoid man!
i would agree with leythos. no real reasom to hide on USENET unless you are
trolling, or doing illegal stuff.
there is option to anonym. yourself via a SOCKS PROXY. i never tried it.
but apparently it works.

I've used Steganos Internet Anonym and it really seems to work. It's easy to
set up and the user is given control over the interval in which the program
switches proxies (IPs).

As far as MP3's and Movies go I remember Kevin saying something about a
feature in Kazza Lite that blocks known RIAA ip addresses. I don't know how
much good it will do but I guess it's a start. I'm sure you could find
something in regards to this by searching GOOGLE.
However, I agree with the above poster. If your not doing anything you
shouldn't be doing there's really nothing to be worried about.
