Need portable encryption tool
Posted by Don Shelton on January 31st, 2004

I'm looking for an encryption utility that I can us for encrypting files
that will be carried on a USB drive. PGP is good, but I need to carry the
decryption s/w with me. Cannot install PGP on any possible machine I might
need to use because of licensing.

I do not want to install s/w on the decrypting machine, just execute
something off the USB drive, so it needs to be small and portable. It does
not need to be DOD strength.

Any suggestions please?

tnx
don

Use WinZIP and password protect the ZIP file on the non-volatile RAM disk.

ZIP files are easy to crack :P Better off with summink like BCWipe (has DoD
shit
and sexy 448 bit blowfish) should fit onto a USB drive, just depnds on how
big your
storage device is

Mimic:

BestCrypt may be better than WinZIP.

But on another note....on BCWipe

Just because they "say" they conform to DoD standards does not mean it is approved and
tested by DISA for wiping DoD Hard Disks !

Nowhere at the web page did they even reference the ASD, Linton Wells II, June 2001 memo
(Disposition of Unclassified DoD Computer Hard Drives) stating the NEW standard for
sanitizing hard disks.

There is a tool that I have been playing around with called crypTool.
It is freeware and available at www.cryptool.com

You might want to check it out. I use it for various tasks (mainly I am
interested in Cryptogrophy) but I also use it to encrypt files on my
notebook and my home PC. It is quite handy.

Here is a quick summary from the site:

What is CrypTool?
CrypTool is a freeware program which enables you to apply and analyse
cryptographic mechanisms. CrypTool contains an exhaustive online help, which
can be understood without deep knowledge in cryptography, therefore no
printed user manual on how to use CrypTool is provided. CrypTool is
completely available in English and German. CrypTool has implemented almost
all state-of-the-art crypto functions and allows you to learn about and use,
modern and classic cryptography within the same environment.

The methods available include both

a.. classical methods (e.g. the Caesar and the double-column transposition
(permutation) encryption algorithms) and
b.. modern cryptosystems (for example, the RSA and AES algorithms, as well
as algorithms based on elliptic curves).
A summary of all the encryption algorithms implemented in CrypTool

Blowfish Advanced CS would do it - at 1.4Mb it ought to be small
enough to sit on your usb drive.
Doesn't need installing, just unpack to a directory and run.

Plenty of options built in, choice of algorithms - fast and reliable.
