Well it may work on your system, but it has a major problem running on mine.
Do you think it works fine because it doesn't report any viruses/trojans?
I would write a prog to do that in 2 minutes!!
Its kinda hard to *prove* your system is virus free.
Using AVG to verify AVG is pointless!!
How do you know you are not infected?
I presume you 'just know' in which case why use AV software?
I just ran ad-aware and hijackthis (both bang up to date)
and neither reported the trojan.
It was not 'active' on my system but it was nonetheless still there (and
still is!!).
If you like I can email it to you and you can put it in the same place
and see if it is detected? (I would be interested to know myself)
That offer is open to anyone, just leave an email address.
It has been in-active on my system for ages, (I am sure) and I looked
back at my logs of AVG runs over the past year and it was not spotted
on *either* of my drives!! (albeit basically the same drive info!).
I know this because hijackthis spotted it initially (but obviously didn't
remove all of it), have a search for msinfo.exe (thats its name) on your
system to see if you have it.
I am not in anyway suggesting that AVG had some finiancial incentive
for not spotting what seems to be a piece of commercial software,
far from it. It seems more likely that the scan simply missed it because of
the way it works. Afterall hard drives are big places!!

I never said that it did not detect virus. I could write the same program in
two mins also. But since I compare my results with McAfee On-Line Scan, our
corp. Version of NA (which does not miss much), Sophos Antivirus Corp.
Edition and randomly check it with other type systems, I can say its pretty
clean. Since we are a DOD contractor and when connected to the Company LAN,
All PC gets scanned several time per day, I think they would show up.
No AVG nor any other virus program is perfect, AVG has missed some, but not
that many. If someone has the perfect antivirus that does not slow a system
way down, then I am all for it. And if something comes along that works for
me better then AVG, I will go for it.
Just reporting the facts.

Select the file types you want \avg to scan, default scan will only scan
executables, the file extension you gave is NOT executable so wont be scanned.
single file scan will of course scan whatever you point it at.
When everything else fails, read the helpscreens

Thats because the virus file found is startpage.DG not an executable, as all
those apps keep telling you, when in doubt read the help screens,

The last post, that is near the bottom of this page, it starts with my name
and ends with it with alot of quotes in there that I never said.Unless they
were your comments that I did not see, my post was rather short and
basically said that my version appears to work.

OK your right, you did not "say" I said them, but when my name starts at the
top, followed by 20 lines or so of info and then comes my signature, it sure
looks like it came from me. The reposting of what everyone is saying is
getting almost impossible to follow as the way you have reposted them, it
looks like one huge message.

msinfo.exe.<something else>
you won't see the extension after the second period, now will you?

Hmmm , interesting . i agree that avg is not the best , but it is free. It
also did not find two virii/trojans on my machine with it , one masquerading
as an innocent looking file called explore.exe that is a RAT that looks for
bank details and another masquerading as winhlpp32.exe that is another RAT
that kills several anti virus startup routines / processes and allows people
to execute remote commands over an IRC channel. These are respectively
Greybird G and W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen . I received neither of these by email ,
so the little critters must have just filtered in over the web , before I
had any cyber condoms on. I would recommend anyone who is in doubt to do the
Symantec version of 'house call' to scan their machine at:
http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck/

Its OK now, I know why it didn't scan my whole disk,
I didn't have the control centre activated.
Without it activated you cannot access the options for the 'complete test'.
With the control centre activated I could see the 'complete test'
was set to scan just \windows.
I don't have the control centre activated normally because I don't
want the thing active.
I suppose AVG would call this design flaw a 'feature'.

my brain lock, sorry.
I remember that there was a virus that masqueraded into
the puter by using a double extension.
maybe it has to be attrib as a system file??
or maybe an earlier OS...
or maybe an outlook attachment????
whatever.
bottom line: IMHO AVG is a decent prog.
& one should NEVER trust one detection method.
don't believe me? go read a few comparative reviews.
Good luck

who's (UI) doesn't? lol
ok, the UI stinks.
still, don't trust any one detection method.
try out a few, use the free online scanners,
and, most of all, if you get infected, find out what the virus does
by reading up on it at the various AV websites.
when NIMDA hit here, it was the day it was "discovered"
so there was NO info available....
imagine that you are sending out 10's of emails to every person in
your company...
and there is no info as to why....
that was a week of my time wasted.
