- Value of SSCP vs. just Security+
- Posted by Donald Jacobsen on September 19th, 2003
Hello all,
I'm planning on sitting for Security+ by the end of the month, and looking
at my options for further marketability in the security arena. It seems that
CISSP and, to a lesser extent, SSCP are the only real big name security
certs out there.
Considering I don't have the 3 years of relevant experience required to
sit for the CISSP, SSCP is my only option. However, looking through the
material and taking some practice exams, it seems to be pretty much on the
same skill level as Security+, if not lower.
Is having SSCP under your belt worth it? The exam fee is pretty steep
($350), and the cert just isn't anywhere as marketable as CISSP, which is
$450 I believe. I'd like to get as many security related certs as possible
(thinking of going to CIW Security Analyst as well), but if it's all
redundant, and a potential employer knows it, should I bother?
Also, I think I read somewhere that ISC2 will accept the Security+
certification in lieu of the requirement of 1 year of related experience for
the SSCP. Can anyone verify this? If this is true, does anyone know of a way
to bypass the 3 year requirement on CISSP?
Thanks for any insight.

You must meet the requiremnets to take the CISSP. I have taken the CISSP
(awaiting results) and can tell you its very different from Security+
(passed). I'm not usre about the SSCP, but I think it's geared more toward
the technical side of security. I also have CIW security Analyst (passed)
and that too is techically focused. The CISSP is management focused and the
test reflects that greatly.
