- 3rd Hard drive questions
- Posted by B A T M A N on January 13th, 2005
1.Can I have a 3rd HD run from my motherboard? (possibly a piggyback cable
to avoid being on same cable as dvd)
2. If I was to place it into an external usb case, could I run it
permanently along side my pc, or would I have to turn it off after long
periods?
3. Does it have to be just for back ups, or will it run programs fast enough
from it? ie, games or media.
4. Any case recommends for a Maxtor 160gig 3.5 inch drive, 8mb cache. I need
cool and quiet.

Most motherboards will support 4 IDE devices, so it can be any mix of
hard drives and CD/DVDs. For more drives internally, you can add a
controller card. But the USB solution you mention is good. It should be
fast enough and cool and quiet enough to use all the time.

Works the same as any other hard drive.
As external usb, I can take the thing anywhere and use it on another machine
if need be.
Why mess with the enclosures?

What a maroon! Richard, what the f*** is he going to do with a hard drive
sitting on his desk with nothing covering up the electronics? And what about
the conversion from IDE to USB? How's he gonna do that? Buy an enclosure,
take the electronics out, and throw the case a way? Go answer questions at
alt.im.stupid.richard and leave these people alone...
