- 8GB tape drive "unrecoverable hardware error"
- Posted by WCH on May 13th, 2004
I've used a Colorado brand 8GB internal tape back-up drive for the past
couple of years. Everything worked fine, it was a great backup device. I
just rebuilt my computer and did a fresh install of Windows 2000, then
reinstalled all my hardware and software (solved a lot of problems). I've
got a Dell Pentium III with 512MB memory and a 20GB hard drive with lots of
free space.
Now, most of the time that I run a tape back-up I get an error message that
reads "The backup device reported an unrecoverable hardware error. Please
insert another media to continue."
I tried several different tapes, including a different brand, with the same
results.
I tried rebooting the computer. No help.
I tried moving my devices so the tape back-up drive was not on the same IDE
cable as the hard drive. No help.
I tried a little light cleaning of the drive surfaces with a q-tip and
denatured alcohol. No help.
I tried a brand new tape. No help.
Any ideas what's going on here?

possibility that the tape drive is being affected by nearby
hardware - it may be the magnetic field from a drive motor.
Otherwise, is the drive well grounded? Tape drives usually
have a tag to allow the metalwork to be bonded to the
computer chassis. You can get some strange circulating
currents otherwise, with their resultant magnetic fields.
Very rare this - I have yet to encounter it in practice.
And, for another straw, how is the drive mounted in the
chassis? I have seen a drive not functioning because the
installer used screws that were incorrect and went too far
into the drive.

You should be getting an error ID number with that message. This link
can help you decode it.

Off the top of my head, I would say there could be a patch for the
Colorado backup software that needs to be installed, or a
firmware/driver update you're missing since you did the rebuild.

Might be worth just getting a new drive. you said you have had it a few
years, they dont last forever.
You might alo want to try a cleaning tape. You can get then for tape drives.
you never know it might just solve your problem
