Ad-Aware not finding problems???
Posted by Bud Light on February 23rd, 2005

I'm running Ad-Aware SE build 1.05. I always download the latest updates
before scanning. And for the last little while it has found nothing but
negligible objects. However, I used another program and it found about 16
ad infected programs. What gives?

The people who wrote Ad-Aware quite possibly don't categorize what the other
found as being problems. This happens frequently - which is why it's usually
suggested to run two or more scanning programs. There is no 'list' of
exactly what is considered adware or spyware.

It is possible that your second program, which you did not identify,
is finding items that AdAware either misses or does not consider to be
spyware. Pretty much every spyware removal program misses some items
which is why most good advice includes the suggested use of at least 2
different programs.

It is also possible that your second program is one of the "scumware"
category of products which intentionally report many "false positives"
in an attempt to convince you to purchase their product.

Without the name of the second program it is impossible to determine
which of the above paragraphs your experience fits into.

Good luck

Thanks for the responses. The other adware programs that I'm using are free
online scanning ones. They are Spyware Begone and SpySweeper and they find
quite a few that Adaware is not finding.

Spyware Begone is scumware. Here is what spywarewarrior.com has to
say about it:
"aggressive advertising; false positives work as goad to purchase;
free scanner uses out of date ref database; same company as Spyware
Vanisher "

Webroot Spy Sweeper (http://www.webroot.com/products/spysweeper/) is a
reputable product. I am not certain how good their free online
scanner is, but the paid for full program is considered to be okay.

Good luck

Thanks again for the info. I guess I'll stick with Ad-aware for now.
