Administrator "locked out" on XP / MSIE
Posted by Surfer on August 20th, 2003

Son installed a software product on our XP system (dial up, not
networked) and clicked the "install AOL" icon it planted on the
desktop. Yuk. Caught and cancelled early before the process
completed, but not soon enough to avoid fowling existing MSIE
and Outlook express applications. (Ended up with AOL throbber,
AOL home page, and so on.)

In MSIE, when I try and change options using the Administrator
account, action is blocked saying "Operation cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this system. Contact system
administrator." Would attempt to uninstall MSIE and Outlook
Express but those actions are blocked as well.

I've heard AOL horror stories and this sounds like one of them.
I'm fully backed up, and am prepared to wipe and resinstall XP
and needed applications. But would prefer to just reinstall MSIE
and OE.

But before I do that, is there an XP screen for controlling
user/rights that I can check that might override this situation.
Thanks.

Sounds like Spybot has locked the system. Open SpyBot, Goto immunize and
uncheck lock IE Control Panel. HTH
