Alternate Network Configuration problem
Posted by Lowly Engineer on August 28th, 2005

I need to set up two laptops for both a static IP (at home) or a
dynamic ip (when travelling). I'm running XP Pro on one machine and
XPHome on the other.

Following Microsoft's instructions for an "Alternate Network Setup", I
went to Control Panel\Network and went down to the IP setup.

I have a "General" and an "Advanced" tab (the Advanced tab is for
firewall setup). There is no "Alternate network configuration".

I have downloaded all service packs and updates. What do I need to do
in order to get the Alternate Network Configuration tab to appear?

TIA

Set it for DHCP first then you will see the Alternate configuration tab.

Thanks! That worked.

Next problem:

At work, the computers are part of a doman. At home they are part of
a workgroup.

Is there a way I can deal with both transparently?

Nope. You have to select the workgroup from the drop down before you log in.
That means 2 separate profiles but you should be able to still log into your
domain profile using cached credentials.

For both your issues, www.netswitcher.com , it's been mentioned in
24HSHD not so very long ago.

It's been a while since I used it and can't remember about it being
transparent for domains, but it does the job for multi site static /
DHCP.

Thinking about it , to change domains the user account has to be given
the security right to do so, which means your IT people have to set
that. It's a MS thing.

Netswitcher is not transparent for domains just for hardware.
