- Alternative to Systemworks?
- Posted by Angela Marsh on December 14th, 2006
Is there a good alternative to Systemworks out there? Something all in one
package that will do it better than Symantec does, and cost less and be
more reliable? ( They won't shut it down on you just because you told them
you bought the CD on Ebay? )

Do you believe one company can do everything better than any other
companies can?
If you are using Windows (and you should have said something about your
OS!!) you should have:
anti-virus
anti-spyware
firewall protection

To (actually) answer your question: Tune Up Utilites 2006 does
the stuff Systemworks does, but with half the resource hit (and
half the price).

Spybot.
Zonealarm.
But I still need HD optimization, something to repair the screwed up
stuff, and HD backup.

annoying (to most people) reminders and warnings. In fact, spyware wanting
to "phone home" should have been already caught by spybots resident
watcher, and/or the virus scanner. A "desktop firewall" is ... well,
somehow similar to a brickwall built on a wooden desktop, and will give the
same (fake) feeling of security at a first glance.
Hmmm. We have corporate pcs running for a year or so, without that stuff and
well fragmented (windows defrag will show then). Since noone is running as
admin, there is no screwed stuff, and no hd backup since "documents and
settings" are redirected to network drives. Fragmentation of ntfs does not
really slow down the system, but the bunch^Wtruckload of security updates
and collected temporary internet files (damned, why does a default install
give some 600 MB of space for myriades of small junkfiles that cannot be
managed without serios loss of performance) will do.
In short terms: no "hd optimization" necessary except regular cleaning and
setting of temporary internet files, windows defrag maybe 2x a year.
Backing up ... for home use, you don't need to backup the OS, just burn a cd
or dvd with "documents and settings" and keep driver and program cds when a
reinstall due to sudden hd death is necessary.

Well should I keep Zonealarm then or just switch to the XP firewall.
I've been using Zonealarm since before XP had one, but if XP's is just as
good, Zonealarm is a pain with all the "updates". ( advertising
opportunities? )
Not sure what you mean. Windows can defrag? Haven't used that. Not
familiar with it. Used to like the screen progress chart that speedisk
showed when it worked. ( cat toy

Switch to XP. The only thing the XP firewall lacks is "outbound"
blocking. (It can keep signals from getting into your system, but
won't keep anything that's already there from signalling out).
That used to be a big deal, until anti-spyware apps became readily
available. Free up those resources, sez I!

Under xps management console (control panel - management) you have a
stripped-down version of once-been-diskeeper. It does not work in the
background, you have to start it manually, but it serves its purpose.
When you are really picky (let's say you need to shrink the partition to
free space for a alternative OS like linux *g*), you can run it a 2nd time
after starting in "safe mode" so less files are kept open by the OS.

Now, even though it appears fine to have a all-in-one-manageable tool, like
a all-in-one radio-tv-sat-dvd-hd-recorder-soundsystem blackbox, if one
minor part of it like the remote breaks, you are out of luck or at least
have to deal with functionality losses all over the place.
