AMD CPU'S
Posted by Th Rt Hon Charles Farquaharson Esq on December 21st, 2003

Hi all,
I have just updated my comp by adding an ASROCK K7S8X motherboard with 2
x 512 pc2700 ddr 333Mhz sticks of memory and an AMD XP 2200 Soc A FSB 266
chip.
Now for some reason it only recognises the chip as an 1800 speed, is this
correct? If so Why?
I am more than happy with the performance, but just curious as to why it
doesn't see the chip for what it's supposed to be,
Thanks in advance for any replies,
Charlie

"quantispeed" or equivalent speed.

re: AMD speed ratings

I did some poking around on this when I last upgraded my computer, as I
suspected that AMD's "equivalent speed" thing just had to be marketing
hype.

It surprised me to find that the general consensus is that AMD's
"equivalent speed" is -- more or less -- a pretty fair measurement for
comparison.

Always check the specs on what you are buying, CPU speed, motherboard
compatability.

Make sure you set the correct FSB/multiplier check the motherboard
manuals.

What do you think it's meant to be?

Check the many previous posts in 24HSHD abount the same subject.

I would if I understood them!

I would if I understood them!

Maybe a 2200 speed?

I didn't really have the time to check through all the old posts, so I
thought I would ask a question on the newsgroup, is this not what it is
intended for?
Sorry to have interrupted your day, I'll let you get back to what you were
doing,
Have a nice day
Charlie.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ a table listing 6 speeds , the AMD marking and frequency.

Hopefully you don't buy a car the same way?

Same documnet page 36, 2133MHz is and AMD model 2600+

So is it back to the shop/dealer for a faster CPU?

I don't buy cars, I have people who take care of that for me!
Could you run that by me again in English this time? )
No, as I said earlier, I am more than happy with the performance, just
curious!
Surely, the more curiosity I have, the quicker I will learn about computers,
then when I know as much as you, I too will be able to come on to the
newsgroups and give out sarcastic answers to "newbies" such as myself!

Try this then, from the given URI look at the tables on the 2 pages 34 &
36. If you wanted whatever you thought 2000 speed was you need to get a
different CPU the 2600+ model.

The info on the tables mentioned, answer your main points.

It didn't sound like it, you were expecting something else hence your
question. The PC didn't run at the speed your were expecting.

If you are happy with the performance fine. If thought if you were
getting a faster CPU or the place you got it from didn't explain the
difference was why I said it helps to look things up.

Not scarcastic, if you have problems being helped and can't look up info
after getting complete URI's and exact page numbers that's your problem.

Part of learning quicker is looking for yourself or checking information
you are given. reading the manuals, online docs.

Funny you should mention that. OP also bought a Datsun B210, and
couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go 210 MPH.

Hokay. Our little secret.

(Isn't the *casual* rule of thumb [speed equals roughly 80% of AthlonRating]?
In my case, it turns out to be 83%, but that's close.)
