i have set my computer up accidentally with the US style keyboard. how can i
revert to UK style (With the @ in the right place)

It's the sort of answer that's valid because the OP didn't bother to state
what Operating System they're using. The answer is different dependant upon
what version of Windows the OP's using, and that's assuming the OPs even
using Windows (unlike you with your Unix kernel).
