- Attributes
- Posted by Vox Populi on January 20th, 2005
I recently bought a Dell Dimension 3000 and I am using Windows XP. I need to
know how to change the attributes for directories saved to CD-RW. All the
files I save become "read only" and therefore I can't change them in any
way, such as adding or deleting files. Thanks in advance.

Not an expert in the area; but I believe the short answer (at least
the one I see the most) is to copy the files to your hard drive, rewrite
the attribute, modify, and then (over)write back to your CD. With a new
machine, you should have plenty of room to do it.

File burned to CD are automatically set to read only. As
trout said, if you need to modify files, copy them to your
hard drive and remove the R/O from properties.

I have XPPro and XPHome on a couple of box's and when I copy files from
a CD/DVD to a folder on the HDD the attribute changes from Read only to
Archive. These machines have SP2 but worked the same way before being
upgraded to SP1 then SP2. Probably "FM" on mine.
Was necessary to change the atribute on Win9x but not my XP and OP
says is using XP.

Common problem - the only alternative to copying them to the hard drive and
removing the read only attribute would be to use "directcd" (Roxio) or InCD
(Ahead/Nero) or similar UDF packet writing software for writing to your
CDRW. (Search google.com for "udf packet software" for others.)
Advantage: the CDRW behaves like a big floppy disk - read/write 'on the fly'
Disadvantages: usually have to format the CDRW first; possibly un-reliable;
CD must load "UDF" software onto any other computer it is used on

This is one of my "pet peeves" with CDs and is the reason I continue to use
zip disks to copy files from my home computer to the office computer. Of
course, CDs are essential if the files are large enough (such as digital
images). I checked into this some time ago and basically learned that CDs
will *always* reset the attributes to read-only -- and it won't do any good
to simply copy a file back to the CD; the attributes will be re-set again.
Here's what I do: go to My Computer. > C Drive > folder you want to change,
then select the file (or files you want to change). Then right-click on the
file(s), select Properties, and *deselect* read-only. Note: you can select
the entire folder for this purpose, if you wish. That is, a group of files
can be changed with a single action.
