AVG Free edition
Posted by gdtobin@exemail.com.au on January 2nd, 2007

Could someone please advise me about this program? I have had it
running for a year or so now and it has been working well. However,
recently it tells me that I need to purchase a new edition from January
15th?

Is there another equally good virus scan that is free to download?

Many thanks

Bil

Did you get the paid for version or are you using the free version?

If you have the paid version it's probably telling you that your
subscription will run out by that date. AVG offers the paid license for
up to 2 or 3 years, I think. After that time you have to renew it.

If it's the free version, then I don't know why it would give you that
message.

the older version of AVG free will be running out shortly but if you upgrade
to 7.5 (also free) then you will have no problems

Be happy that you get to Usenet from anywhere you happen to be. I much
prefer using NNTP but they block it from work, so the only way to post
from there is via HTTP - and that only leave Google Groups. Yeah, it
sucks but it's better than nothing. Giganews doesn't have a webnews UI,
just NNTP (well, no webnews UI that I've been told about for Giganews
via my ISP account).

My ISP refuses to accept off-network connections to the NNTP server, so
I cannot connect to it from work. My work blocks the port, blocks
Usenet providers, and my provider blocks off-domain access. For right
now, I get stuck using Google Groups while at work. I tried setting up
VNC to my home PC so I could use it (since it was on-domain to my ISP)
to get to Usenet from there, and it works, but it is just too damn slow
and flaky, plus I'd be violating company policy by adding my ISP's
network to my company network by briding them through VNC.

So if a user is blocked by company policy and implementation from using
NNTP, what is you oh-so-wonderful substitute for Usenet access via HTTP?
I'm already paying for Usenet (NNTP) so obviously I'd be looking for
free HTTP Usenet access, just like what Google Groups provides. In
fact, now to think about it, too bad someone hasn't written a client
that runs locally and provides [nearly] all the features of a regular
NNTP client but connects via HTTP to Google Groups. Know of such a
program?

While the rest of us would like to ask questions about Solaris, Linux,
SuSE, or some other OS on which we have to test the company's software,
or get help on Windows problems beyond what our IT folks can handle, or
help with applications, like Office, without having to consume the
tickets that our company purchases for support, or ... to do our work by
getting *help*. When we hit a problem on HP-UX, it was through Usenet
that I got help on a required patch specifically for that problem. The
web via HTTP is not all there is and provides little interactive help or
discussion, and finding forums on the topics needed is often fruitless.

I don't like it when IT gets in my way of getting my job done. Rather
than restrict access, establish *clear* company policies regarding use
and content and make DAMN sure you enforce them with punitive measures
if violated. A rule unenforced is no rule.

Great if all you do on Usenet if personal or entertainment activity.
Pretty worthless to be holding onto a question you need answered from
work when all the data that you need top copy/paste into the post isn't
at home. To some folks, Usenet is NOT a time-wasting fluff hobby. It
is another source for information and help. But then knowing your
typical inability to address the real issue, your response here is
typical of you.

I don't have any fluff hobbies, myself.

What, you got some jock itch making you ornery or something?

Flippancy is not the same as humor. Blinky doesn't have a solution
beyond what was already described as available but he felt compelled to
post something.

No, it says that as of January 15th or 17th (depending on WHICH
splash screen you're reading), support for AVG Free Version 7.1 will be
discontinued.

At the BOTTOM of both splash screens is a small link that will, via
a few jumps, take you to http://free.grisoft.com - where you can download
AVG Free Version 7.5 .

AVG Free 7.5 - ActiveShield (Kaspersky's AV as packaged by AOL) at
http://www.activevirusshield.com/ - BitDefender Free at
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view...-Products.html - several
others. You can also google for EAV7PROMO.EXE and use that. There's also
CLAMWIN ( http://www.clamwin.com ), although that's not a resident scanner
(well worth having if you're paranoid as an on-demand scanner, though.)

You're welcome.
