avi to mpeg problems

I have been trying to convert some animated avi movies to mpeg so I can burn
onto a disc to play in a DVD player on my home TV.Now these avi movies are
approx 25 minutes playing time each, I can use nero to make a VCD but it
will only allow me to add one file at a time and burn.I would like to have 2
files per disc(this would utilise the disc space) when set up nero it
encodes the avi and saves it in as a dat file in the folder on the disc.My
question is(rather long winded I know) can I simply copy the dat file from
the resulting burny cd and rename it with an mpeg extension then burn again
as a mpeg vcd or will this not play in my dvd player, or can I copy the dat
file and avseq01 and rename it to avseq2 and then have more than one of
these dat files in the folder on the cd, will it give me option to play
these when I use dvd or can only one file have the dat
extension?alternatively can anyone recommend an avi file joiner(freeware)
that works so I can join the two original avi together to make one long one
that will encode for burning

Fuck Nero for conversion. Get TMPGEnc and convert the avis to
VCD-compliant mpgs. Then you can burn them as many times as
you want by choosing the VCD burn setting in Nero or any other
burning software. Your DVD player doesn't recognize the files
alone: there must be a folder/menu setup that is created by the
burning software in VCD mode.

TMPGEnc will also flawlessly join/edit mpgs. And, no, you
cannot just rename a .dat as an .mpg and expect it to work
properly in all softwares. You need to do that conversion
with VCD Gear.
