- BackUp from specified date onwards
- Posted by MiniEmma on February 16th, 2004
Hi all
Does anyone know of a BackUp method or Software that can backup files only
from a specified date onwards?
In the past i have just dragged what i want into the writable window and
backed it onto CD. But i haven't had to format my hard drive for soooo long
that there is so much more data on there than ever before so it's not so
easy to choose the new stuff IYSWIM
I have Windows XP - does it do what i want?
Cheers

Are you saying that you only want to back up files of
a certain date, or newer? If so, that's a silly (maybe
even dangerous) way of backing up.

Depending on what software you're using to back up, you should be able
to sort by Date Created and Modified. In EZ CD Creator or Windows
Explorer, f'rinstance, click on the Modified or Created fields to sort
by date. If those aren't available, right-click on the Columns bar
and select "Created' and "Modified". Then just grab the recent files.

Your software[1] can "choose the new stuff" by doing an incremental or
differential backup of only the stuff that's new or changed since your
last full backup.
Do some reading on backup strategies. Google would be a good place to
start, and "backup strategy" might be a good search. This is if you
don't want to just read the documentation that comes with your backup
software, and implement it from that.
[1]You don't have to know which is new; that's what backup software is
for.

thanks dan
i had thought of that but it just seemed a little long winded, i have a lot
of folders all with subfolders.
i just wondered if there was something really clever out there

Aha! You're talking about incremental backups.
Most decent backup utilities allow this.
