geographic areas are more likely to connect to a certian gateway machine so
this reduces it to maybe a few dozen.
If the use is abusive and you have a server log of the activity, contact
AOL's abuse department and they will be able to look into it, if they care.

Can anyone help me with banning a non static IP address? We're having a
problem with someone abusing our tagboard at our messageboard. She is using
AOL dialup and every time we try to ban her IP address, she just pops back
up with a new one. It's really upsetting because we want to keep the
tagboard, but she's done this several times now and we don't know what else
to do to keep her away. The delete and ignore approach doesn't work on this
one. She just waits a few months and starts again. A few times we got an
exact IP match, so we're sure it's the same person. This last time, she
even identified herself. How many IP addresses can someone have on AOL
dialup, and is there a way to ban her for good? Any suggestions are
appreciated. Thanks.

You could try something like http://www.tag-board.com/features.html.
This looks like it will block posters even with dynamic IP addresses.
From their website:
IP Viewing and Banning
You can block unwanted visitors from continuing to deface your
website. This option also includes an inproved ban technique with an
algorithm that will not be revealed. This improved ban can also
usually prevent a user from posting even if (s)he has a dynamic IP
address.

We do have some AOL users, so I'm not sure we want to do that at this point.
The tagboard won't let me ban the AOL proxy, it just says it's an invalid IP
if I put it in. I can only ban one IP at a time on the tag and that's what
the problem really is. Has anyone heard of a password protected tagboard?
There's got to be something we can do.
