Bill aimed at software piracy killed

Two major software companies flexed their political muscle Wednesday to
help kill a bill that would have forced the firms to soften their
computer piracy safeguards.

State Rep. Gary Beard, R-Baton Rouge, said he filed House Bill 689 after
a software company allegedly disabled his computer because he had not
kept his licensing code.

Beard said he received notification that an update was available for his
legitimately purchased software. When he tried to download the update,
the manufacturer's Web site demanded his licensing code -- and disabled
his computer when he could not produce it.

"You cannot open a file. You cannot use that computer at all," Beard
told the Senate Commerce Committee ...
