My friends computer has a password to get into his Bios, and hes forgotten
it! is it possible to clear the password by removing the CSMOS BATTERY for a
few seconds?

yes, but you will also clear all the settings for hard drive and power
options. so you may need to manually reset them. most new BIOSes can "auto
detect" these settings but i have found that they don't always work

Can you locate the motherboard manual on the web? Many mobos have "hotkeys"
that you can hold during boot that will bypass the password.

A few seconds may be not enaugh. Make it a few minutes.

You shouldn't have to remove the battery. Find the CLEAR CMOS jumper,
and follow your motherboard documentation to clear it. Some require
you to change from pins 1-2 to 2-3. Some just leave it like that for a
few seconds, others you have to power on and off. They all differ so
make sure to consult your manual to see how to clear it.

Believe it or not, I have run across machines out there that this will NOT
clear the password on. If you can boot to floppy, there is a great utility
out there called KILLCMOS, I have used this thousands of times over my
career when people screw up their passwords. Do a search for it in your
favorite search engine. It is a lifesaver.
