Bizarre problem - PLEASE HELP
Posted by DLee122298@aol.com on February 12th, 2006

I had to take my PC in for service to correct all the problems with it.
Now I've gotten it back, and everything seems to be fine so far, but
when I try to play music CD's in either my CD-RW burner or DVD-ROM
drive, I don't get any sound at all through my speakers. The entire
sound system is apparently fine because I can play sounds, and I can
hear the music through headphones directly connected to my CD-RW
burner, and I can successfully play a DVD in my DVD-ROM drive with both
video on the screen & audio through the speakers, so why the heck can't
I hear any music through my speakers whenever I try to play music CD's?
Everything else about my CD-RW burner & DVD-ROM appears to be fine.
PLEASE HELP - it'll be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager. Right click on
your drive and select properties. Select the Properties tab, and check
there is a tick in "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device"

I appreciate your effort to help, but I'm not finding any such option
for my CD-playing drives in Device Manager - the only place I'm finding
such an option is in CD Music properties in Multimedia properties (in
the Control Panel), and the option is disabled so that I actually have
no option either way.

I forgot to mention in my original/previous message that I've already
checked some of the more obvious things such as all volume controls,
etc. It's still a completely baffling mystery to me why I can't get
any sound at all through my speakers when I play music CD's in my
CD-playing drives.

Again, to anyone who can, please help - it'll be greatly appreciated -
thanks.

Double check your audio connection cable. This would be a small
(possibly 4 conductor) cable that connects either to the sound card or
the mother board. I would suspect that during the servicing the cable
may have become disconnected.

Good Luck!

Fortunately, that turned out to be it exactly. Thanks!

You have other problems then, because that cable has not been required
for years (since Windows 95 IIRC).

some computer builders dont put that cables in eneymore if you look in
media player at cd propertys for playback in digital or anilog the cable is
only for the anilog [old way] to play cds media player uses digital playback
by defalt but on some systems the sound will skip I always set it for anilog
and find i have to add the cables to the cd drives
