Bootable AV freeware?
Posted by Xantipis on March 11th, 2008

I have a machine that will not go beyond the "welcome" screen in regular
windoze.
My EXPENSIVE virus program will not operate in "safe mode" and gives me no
way to make a bootable disc.

Anyone know of a "bootable" (preferably freeware) Anti Virus program, so
maybe
I don't have to reload my whole system?

Google no help.
Thanks
Xan

Download the definitions/data base for
F-Prot Antivirus 3.16f (2705)
And
McAfee Antivirus 4.4.50 (2705)

Read the readme.txt on how to burn them (definitions) to the CD

with a good up-to-date scanner as 2nd one, for a test.
But then, why are you so certain it is a virus?

No not missed, but there was no suggestion the op had tried to boot in safe
mode, nor for that matter was there anything to say the sys was infected

Thanks for your reply.
I see you understand my need for having a bootable ready to run AV program
so I can check ANY computer I see at any time. It would make me feel secure.
Kind o' like putting toilet paper on a public toilet seat.....right?

Avert Stinger is very good. Before it was updated it fit nicely on a 3.5
floppy. You can get an older copy if you looked. I fixed several problems
with it on friends and in-laws machines using it. With USB sticks, now it
will fit in a to-go mode.

Implied is that you can boot into safe mode? So what "EXPENSIVE virus
program" do you have that won't "operate" in safe mode?

We do this all the time:-

1. Take out drive.
2. Install drive in external drive caddy
3. Attach caddy to scanning station and scan drive.

Advantage is you are not scanning under the possibly infected and
running operating system.

What makes you think that the sticking on the Welcome screen is a virus
anyway? Sounds to me more like a shafted OS. Granted the shafted OS
could have been caused by some ham fisted virus cleaning up operation.
