burned DVD cannot be read by other drives
Posted by Tones on November 13th, 2005

Hi all

I burnt some backup data on DVD using Nero, but the disks cannot be read by
any other DVD drives (I've tried 4 other DVD drives), but it can be read by
the DVD writer I burnt it with. I've tried both DVD-R and DVD+R, but the
results are the same.
I've already selected simulation, caching, determine max speed, no
multisession.
Does anyone have any ideas, or maybe need me to provide more info?

Did you make it a multi-session disk? Because Nero warns you that doing
that can result in incompatibilities with some operating systems and
some ROMs.

How old are your DVD drives and your burner?

They are all between 2 and 3 years old.

Just to elaborate a little bit more, there were no errors at all during or
after the burning. In fact, it says it has successfully burned the DVD, but
when I put it in other computers to read it, nothing shows up, as though it
was a blank one. So I put it back in the writer i burnt it with, all the
data is there as it should.

Have you tried a different program? I've never used Nero. I'm partial to
NTI CD/DVD Maker and have never had a problem except in some units more
than 3 years old.

I've tried dragging the files into the writer drive directly in Windows
Explorer and tried burning it there, but it also failed.
It burns for a while and then ends up saying there were errors.

Maybe the burner is just not a good unit. Some are better than others,
even among name brands. If possible, try using a different burner and see
how if the disk will play in your other drives. Or maybe burn something
on somebody else's system and see if that disk will play in your other
drives. That would narrow the problem down considerably.
