- Can IP's also be blocked with OE6..
- Posted by Bigbazza on April 9th, 2005
Is it possible to 'Block' IP No's as well as E-mail addresses (like on
Newsgroup's)...We have a persistent 'Troll' on one of a few Newsgroups I
use...He keeps changing his ID by using other's particulars !...But his IP
No never changes !...I usually block some by using OE6 and putting them in
my 'Blocked Senders' book !
Appreciate responses to this problem ..

This is something that is not easily done, because of how the news group
system works. The names of the senders are not directly associated with IP
numbers. Email addresses are identified as text, from a server that has a
fixed IP. Many of these servers are so big that they use many IP addresses
for the same service.
If you see something that you don't like, simply press the next key, or
whatever you do to advance your messages. Or, you can simply use your delete
key to erase it from your screen.
What you can do with OE, is make up a rule in the Create Rule From Message
for news groups. In there, you can build a list of words that you do not
like, and apply this rule to delete all the messages that have the
particular words. This way, you are building up a set of rules, based on
what you are putting in to the list. You better have a good imagination! I
learned a few new words myself in these groups.
If you do that, you may miss out on a lot of good information, since there
are many people that will use the odd profound word in their legitimate
message.
Personally, I find these profane messages amusing. I see a type of humour in
it.

Not with naked OE; those who favor other newsreaders would say 'Get a
real newsreader'. XNews has some serious filter muscle.
You can put a proxy for that in front of OE.
You would have to use a proxy like Nfilter/NewsProxy with an nfilter.dat
line aimed at the nntp posting host or such.

You can.
You just have to use a tool/proxy
http://www.nfilter.org/ -- nfilter : A Client-side Usenet News Filter -
Nfilter is a supplemental filtering program to your existing newsreader.
It is designed to run transparently alongside any client for Windows
such as Outlook Express, Agent, Netscape, etc.

Like I mentioned... I sort of use the delete key when I don't want to read
something. But, in any case some of profanities I see here are very
interesting.
