- CANON A80 digital camera -- MADE IN JAPAN vs. MADE IN CHINA
- Posted by wgreene on July 13th, 2004
I called Circuit City this morning and learned that they had one CANON A80
left in stock, so I put it on my credit card over the phone and went over
tonight and picked it up. It was in the box, which I didn't bother to open
and inspect to make certain everything was included. I just got home and
took it out of the box and it appears that the camera and all its
accessories are there, but there is one thing that really bugs me. I happen
to have an affinity for Japanese company products which are actually
manufactured in Japan, and a photo of the A80 at dcresource.com clearly
showed "Made in Japan" stamped on the bottom. Well, I removed my camera from
its box a few minutes ago, and, much to my disappointment, noticed "Made in
China" stamped on the bottom. I presume this is a common practice with all
or most of the major camera companies, so it's probably no big deal. What I
AM wondering, though, is if I'm getting an exact duplicate -- more or
less -- of the "Made in Japan" CANON A80 I saw pictured and reviewed by
dcresource.com. If the quality is the same, then I don't really mind.
What disappoints me even more, though, is that I was at Best Buy last night
looking at their A80 display model and saw on the bottom "Made in Japan." I
would have bought one there, but I had noticed on the Net that Wal-Mart had
it for $13.00 less. Naturally, when I got to Wal-Mart there were no A80's in
stock. Now that I think about it, I figure there's a good chance Wal-Mart's
A80's would have been manufactured in China, like so much of what they sell.
Do you believe that my concern is much ado about nothing? If not, I wonder
how much trouble I would have returning the camera to Circuit City for a
refund and then going to Best Buy to purchase one, assuming, of course, that
they have an A80 manufactured in Japan. (Looking back, I now wish I had
called Best Buy this morning instead of Circuit City.)

, Once upon a time in a land far away wgreene was alleged to have said:
China was just a few years ago, the same thing as saying "Really Crappy
Quality." That seems to have changed in recent years, though.
I do object to sending my money to support the Communist government in
China, but sometimes there seems to be no other option. I remember a few
years ago I bought a GE DVD player because it was the only one WalMart
had that was NOT made in China. It was about $30 more than the cheapest
brand, but I figured it was worth the difference to get the higher
quality and to keep my money out of the hands of the Communists. The GE
turned out to be a piece of crap. I now own a DVD player that was Made
in China (the cheapest generic brand I could find). It is much better
than the old GE.
I hate giving money to the Communists. My wife and her family are
refugees from Cuba, but I think the quality is the same as any other
these days. After all, they are manufactured to the specs of the company
whose name is on the product and must pass that manufacturer's quality
control process. Canon's name is well respected in cameras. I think
you'll be happy with it.

Good thinking. Those shameless communists steal from their workers and
allow them little or no say while they try to brainwash them and force
them to cheer and sing. These guys have a horrible human rights record
but the courts are in the pockets of their Party and offer little or no
help to the workers.
