- Can't delete or rename long file names in Windows XP Pro
- Posted by rfdjr1@optonline.net on March 30th, 2006
As far as I can tell from Googling this issue, Windows XP is supposed to support
long file names. However, whenever I go to delete or rename a long file (near as
I can tell, one over 80 characters in length) by right clicking on the file, an
error box comes up telling me that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem,
and will shut down. The issue I'm facing is mostly renaming mp3 files which
include more information than I want, such as artist, album name, song
title...mp3 Usually all I want in my folders are the song title. But as I say,
if I right click, and try to rename them, I get this error and can't do
anything. Any information about this? Thanks.

I have no idea of the history of your system, or anything in great detail.
From searching around, I am suggesting something from MS that may be of
help. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312368
One thing you can try, is to run the utility called System File Compare,
SFC /SCANNOW from the system prompt, and follow the instructions. You will
need the original XP installation CD to use this utility. This procedure may
fix the problem.
In the worse situation, you may have to reformat, and re-install the system.

Any error codes to go with that message?
Have you tried moving your data to a different location requiring less
folders? What I mean is this: typically music files get stored in "My
Music", right? Well that is often really here: c:\documents and
settings\user name\my documents\my music\ right? Well, add a folder for
artist, album, etc., and the path\filename because absolutely huge! I
usually drag that My Music folder to the root to eliminate much of the path
length. I don't know if it will help, but it won't hurt.

Windows Explorer that I used the "command prompt". I changed directories
(cd) to the appropriate directory. I then deleted the file, only using the
first 5-6 letters followed by an asterisk symbol (*) and the extension.
Poof! File was deleted.

True. And that should work with renaming as well (ren xxx_yyy_zzz.mp3
xxx_yyy.mp3 <enter>).
God and I didn't.
