- Cat 5 crossover cable
- Posted by IG on February 15th, 2006
I have a cat 5 crossover cable between 2 rooms allowing me to share an
internet connection.
Want to change it over to a straight cable, and replacing the cable
would not be easy.
Question: If I join another short crossover cable at one end, do I get
a straight cable?
Thanks ....Ian

Yes. You can put a feed-through with another crossover cable, and it should
come back to normal. I've done this type of thing myself. I would guess you
are going to install a router.
Most professional installers would prefer to re-do the connector on one end
of the cable to make it a straight cable (patch cable), or run in a new
cable. This avoids another variable in the signal path. But, under normal
circumstances, the connections should be reliable.

Before tampering with the cat5 cable, dependant on what you want to do
be aware that some of the new hubs/switches/routers have autosense and
can detect if the cable is normal or crossed over. Recently I changed
a switch and one cable did not work. When I checked further I found
that the 4 port switch I replaced had auto sense, the replacement 16
port did not.
Hope this helps.
