CD problem - bizarre
Posted by John on March 6th, 2006

Here's 1 I just dont understand:

I tried to install software from CD on my desktop - although CD drive lights
up no installation takes place.

Same CD was put in a laptop - installed fine.

Then I copied the cd on the laptop to a CDR.

CDR then inserted in desktop - sware ran ok and programme installed.

Why?

Any correct answer wins a prize.

In My Computer, right click the cd, select explore, execute setup.

No - that isn't the issue - the PC will simply not recognise the original
CD - when I look at the cd drive via my computer its as though there is no
drive there.

Once copied though its fine.

Hi, John,
A few questions so we can narrow this one down:

Is the disk a CD or DVD?
What are the markings on the disk CDR+, CDR-, etc?
What kind of optical drive do you have in the laptop? What type drive
in the desktop?
And, finally, what type of media burning software do you have on both
machines? If it's anything "Roxio" then that narrows it down quite a
bit!

Cheers!

Bobby

the disk is a CD.
The original CD doesn't say what type it is - the CD I use to copy it onto
is CDR
The drive in the desktop is an NEC drive - laptop unsure
The cd burning sware on the desktop is Sonic "Record Now" again not sure on
laptop but it isn't Roxio.

Thanks

You have missed the point. The OP's problem is with an original CD not
installing on one of his computers. When he makes a copy it installs
correctly.

(By the way, with CDs there are no "+" or "-" formats as in DVDs.)

No real mystery John, sounds like your laptop's drive is better able to
correct any errors which may be on the original disc than your desktop
optical drive.

Thanks for the response - is this a common problem? I say thi sbecause never
had a problem before and it only seems to happen with sware that I need to
install rather than CDs which contain data such as pics /word files etc.

Thanks

Fairly common John. You could try a CD cleaner, but my best guess
would be that gradually the drive will get worse with more and more CDs
not being read.

Thanks - the drive is only a year old though - or is it a case of useage
rather than age?
