- CDROM
- Posted by Ant on September 25th, 2003
Hi, A friends CDROM has disappeared from My Computer,et al, looking in
device manager, the floppy, IDE Primary, and IDE Secondary controllers have
an exclamation mark against them, suggesting the drivers have been lost for
these items. I've tried removing them in Safe Mode, to allow Windows to
reinstall the drivers, but Windows will not allow this. I have also
reinstalled Windows ME to no avail.
Any ideas how I can overcome this problem please.
Thanks, Tony.

Has your friend recently installed any new hardware. Possibly something is
misconfigured and using the same IRQ or more than likely the same DMA
address as the ide controller. I would first try to remove any recent
hardware and if not recent things like a modem and or sound card. Another
thing you can try is going into the bios in the "PNP" section an put it on
reset. Also make sure your BIOS says PNP OS = Enable.

Sadly, the person involved has very little computer savvy, and decided to
clean up the HD by deleting files as she saw fit, so what of importance was
deleted is anyone's guess.

Use the system restore to roll back to a date prior to the problem.

When I checked that, there were no points stored. She certainly did a good
job on this one

Remove the cables/cards and re-insert them, making sure that
all connections are nice and snug.

Is the CD detected at bootup? Have you tried booting from
a Windows 98 boot disk (with CD support), to see if you
can access the CD drive in DOS?

Yes, the CDROM is detected in DOS. I copied Windows onto the HD from the
CDROM, and then run Set-up from the HD. That was after using a Boot Disc,
and using the Boot with CDROM support option.
I'm off to bed, will look in tomorrow.

If you installed Windows over the top of itself, then you will
have inherited many problems from the previous setup.
Install Windows completely fresh.
