- Changing the registry
- Posted by John on October 13th, 2003
Is there any difference between a .reg file and a .key file?
Just wondered. And how do we change the registry without a
popup asking for confirmation?
Thanks... (Mike,) in advance. :-)

Thanks Phil,
Perhaps I'm tired too because I can't see anything on that
page I didn't know, and I don't feel like buying the book
for what I need to know.

Yes, there is a difference, but don't be fooled. It's only
an association, as with any other file type. You could
easily rename all of your .jpg files to .gpj and get your
graphics viewer to open them just the same.
I don't understand the second part of your question.
Please be more specific.

Well, when clicking on a .reg file it asks if you want to
add it to the registry. I made one or two simple (dos
based) utilities that want to be associated with file types
and it would be nicer if it didn't ask, but just did it.
Thanks Mike..

No, it wouldn't be nicer, at all. Imagine if you clicked on
a .reg file that was not for your system, or was corrupt,
or you didn't actually mean to click on. The warning is
there for a purpose, as a safety guard. However, as
you are talking about DOS based, does this mean they
will be running from DOS (not a DOS window)?
In (Real) DOS mode:
regedit /?

In a dos program running under windows, either full screen or in a window.
It still works if all you want to do is associate a filetype. I know it
would be a bad idea if for every .reg file it didn't ask, but wondered if
regedit has a switch to skip the asking. Or if there's another way to do it.

There is a way, but please be careful when using it, and
back up your registry, or make a restore point first!!
Use the following command syntax:
start /wait regedit /s filename.reg
The /wait switch ensures that regedit has fully completed
the task before handing control back (important), and
the /s switch suppresses the prompt.
