CHKDSK questions - no doucmentation/ how to?
Posted by Nottoman on December 8th, 2003

Just learning about error checking on Win 2000 as I'm trying to fix a PC
with many different blue screens occurring intermittently.
How do I run a thorough HD scan with CHKDSK besides having it run at startup
with no option there that I could find for a surface scan as with Scandisk.
And when CHKDSK is done, I can't find a log file to review the results? A
bit frustrated that the MS site has very limited info on this. Help!

Thanks Hawk. I knew there was a ? there somewhere but didn't know the
syntax.
Didn't tell me where the log file is.
Didn't give options for surface scan or thorough disk scan.
??

Um. Don't you see the option?

Neither do I.

I do - but it might not be obvious at first glance.

The /R option (Recertify bad sectors) calls for a 100% surface scan
....

Of course, you CAN open "My Computer", right-click on the drive,
left-click on "Properties", select "Tools", select "Check this drive" and
tell it to check for bad blocks there ...

Thanks for the tips Ralph. Can't say I use chkdsk much at all, with 98se
though.

But I've gotta a hell of a little T1850 Toshiba, someone gave me, with 3.1
on it. Had to solder up the charger *socket* in the back. If I could
install some small wheels on it and make/ repair the battery, I might use
it. <G>
