Compaq beep code
Posted by Rôgêr on June 26th, 2005

Not having much luck here. Customer brought in vanilla Compaq saying it
won't complete dialing in to ISP. But when trying to power it up I get a
1 long, 6 short beep code, nothing else. Don't see anything yet on
Google, anybody know what this is trying to tell me? I've done all the
usual reseating stuff, taking things out one at a time. Looking like
CPU/motherboard, but it seems there should be something on that beep
code somewhere.

I'm at home now, the box is at the shop. Will have to dig into it to see
since there's no POST. Should have written the model number down before
calling it a night. But enough is enough for now.

Ah google what can you say: 1 long, 6 short beep code

Comes up with: http://www.mytechsupport.ca/links/beep.html
For an AST processor it claims "Unable to load interrupt vectors"

Yeah, I saw that too. It's not an AST, and even if it was, I'm not sure
how I'd go about loading interrupt vectors. I guess with a grain scoop:

A little too much depth of info, getting overload. But I'm starting to
think 1 long, 6 short has something to do with Snow White and her

If its not a mis-seated vid card, ram, or a monitor not connected then
yeah, the mobos broke.

Yes and no. There's nothing there specific about the beep code I'm
getting, but I do have one of them handy-dandy POST code PCI thingies.
May hook it up and see. They again listed 7 beeps as having to do with
Exception Interrupt, whatever the hell that means. I think it means get
another processor.

Sweet, I've always wanted one of those handy-dandy POST code PCI
thingies, just never got around to it.

That's the second reference to "interrupt" without searching I'd say
the bios can't place anything when once it finds it. (ie: give it an
IRQ).

If so a processor won't do any good, and a BIOS flash might be in
order.
