- Posted by Jerry Knight on November 2nd, 2005
I am running windows XP, P4 3.0 ghz cpu, 768 md ram and have an internal
controlerless modem (Intel 536EP) and when I shut down the computer at night
and boot up next morning the new hardware wizard comes up and detects the
modem and re-installs it as #2. thanks for all help.

Perhaps you should get a real modem.

You need to go into Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
and uninstall the #1 modem the computer thinks is installed.

Thank you Blinky, now if you would be so kind as to inform me as to what a
"real modem" is I would be forever indebted to you. Is it like the "real
player"?

Often you just to to device manager in safe mode and delete any modem's
you see there and reboot and let it detect/install.

I dont know if that's the problem, but perhaps "a" definition of a real
modem is one that doesnt require windows to work. A "real modem" is also
called a "hardware" modem. A "real" modem will work in dos. You have a
"winmodem".

You're welcome.
One that's a complete modem, not half-a-modem; i.e., one that is
not a "winmodem" as you admit yours is.

Internal modems are more trouble than they are worth. Get an external one -
Diamond Multimedia have been good to me, my 28.8, 33,6 and 56.6 are all
still working fine. The 33.6 and 56.6 are still in daily use and the 28.8
gets used as an emergency load every now and again.
