I'm in the market for a new computer soon and am curious about opinions
about Sony Vaio(spelling???). So far I've narrowed my search down to the
Sony or a Dell. Currently using an IBM Aptiva, has been a good computer but
very obsolete. TIA.

I run a Sony Vaio PCG-FX701, a 'cheap and cheerful' laptop, for a Sony
anyway. Batteries are crap, yet expensive, and you need two or more if
you're planning on real 'all day' portability. I put more memory in (Now
512 Meg) and it makes a hell of a difference.

I'd suggest getting one with a CDRW at least, or a DVDRW, I didn't and
regret it now. OTOH it has good connectivity, a great keyboard compared to
my older Toshiba, Dell and Compaq laptops, and I've rarely had any trouble
with it. When I have had trouble it's been of my own doing. I've had great
support from Sony with it too, their website is well done and offers more
than just last years drivers etc ..

I'd say it's a good buy, though mine was bought with an extremely
significant discount, I paid less than £300, and I had the choice of either
yes or no, with no choice as to model or spec ...

If I were buying for myself retail though, I'd look very closely at Sony
again. I think VAio's are somewhat over priced, though the level of
support, and their general reliability, they give has to be paid for
somewhere.
