Computer Won't Boot Up
Posted by Greg on January 24th, 2005

We had a power failure in the office this weekend. All the systems are back
up and running fine, except for the receptionists. It's a Gateway
Professional Series. P4 1.3 Ghz. It is giving me three beeps. No boot up
screen and no video source (monitor light stays yellow instead of turning
green). I looked up the beep code and it says three beeps means the ram
needs reseated. Which I have done several times. Also, I have just put in
one stick in difference seats. I have also reseated all the cards at least
three times. I have switched the jumper to try to boot into setup mode.
Nothing there either. Popped out the cmos battery and put it back in. No
good either.

Has all the ram been fried? The fan on the cpu is still spinning. The cd-rom
ejects. I can't hear the hard drive spinning. I guess I can swap the hard
drive for a different one.

Anything I'm missing?

Tried the drive swap. That wasn't it either.

Greg came up with this:

A brain.

Yes i think you are missing something---have you tried removing all the ram
from the machine and replace with a known worker? have you tried the ram in
other machines(one at a time)?
beep codes for gateway are here
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...beepcode.shtml

however different machines have varying beeps--go here
http://search.support.gateway.com/ip...ext=beep+codes

and look at all examples till you find yours---you could even ask tech
support etc

listen to the beep ---is it 1--2 or1--1--1 or just plain3

I have moved the ram around and tried each stick by itself. Still no
booting. We don't have any other machines in the office that take rdram.
They either take sdram or ddram.

The beeps just sound like three evenly spaced beeps. No longer or shorter
pause between them.

You know the machine better than i do--it is sitting in front of you
Your power failure "may" have caused a surge into the machine (especially on
power back up),in which case either the mobo/prossesor/ram/power supply
could have recieved fatal dammage
As you are office based and have a budget for IT,take a stick of ram to your
local shop and get it tested--ram is cheap enough now(and it counts as a
expenditure) go get another small stick and see if it helps.
Have you tried the hard drive in another machine?--is it readable?
Swop in and out is the way to resolve this, but looks like something has gone
to the great chip dump in the sky etc.

Not yet, but we're still hopeful...

Yes. Tried the drive swap. Neither booted up. I took the cpu out and
reseated it. No luck. I ordered some new ram late this afternoon. I'll see
if that helps. According to Gateways website, the three beeps mean the ram
is bad.
