- D-Link NAT router & SPI?
- Posted by Howie on February 28th, 2005
I bought this D-Link wired router for our new home network:
http://www.d-link.com/products/?pid=62
From PC Magazine's site: "Whether you go with a wired or wireless network,
you'll need a router, which will allow you to connect your PCs to the
network and share an Internet connection. Make sure the router you buy has a
built-in stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall. Routers that rely solely
on network address translation (NAT) no longer offer enough protection."
I'm not sure if the router I bought is going to be enough to keep hackers
and others out... anyone have comment? Does my router have SPI? The specs
are tough to figure out (I'm a newbie to networking)...

There is the data sheet for your router. Do you see SPI being mentioned? The
router doesn't seem to have it, because it would have been clearly
indicated.

The D-Link falls into this category.

Since a NAT router even with SPI is not a FW appliance that has a true FW,
then most supplement the router with a personal FW or you can supplement
with IPsec that's on the XP O/S by implementing the AnalogX IPsec rules.

If the router had a true FW, then it would be able to do what's in the link
and you would not need a PFW or IPsec to supplement it.

WatchGuard, Cisco, Sonicwall and others fall into the category.

Would this hardware device (http://alphashield.com/index.htm) be any
good? Heard of it? Worth the money?

I really cannot tell you if it's any good. Maybe, you can find some reviews
about it. Yes, I have heard of Alphashied in passing and that's about it.
For $149 US for the device, I would put that towards getting a low-end
Watchguard or Sonicwall router with a FW.
