An ATX power supply recently conked out on me - the fan stopped
working and then it failed to spin up properly after that. I've
replaced it, but now the system won't boot at all. I've checked all
the connections, taken everything out except for the mobo/cpu/memory,
and it won't boot up. The fans start (PSU fan, case fan, CPU fan all
fine), but there's no POST beeps at all. Yes, the speaker is
connected. When I connect hard drives, it sounds like they spin up
though, which is puzzling. There's no signal to the monitor and the
machine isn't accessible from the network. It's doubtful I'll be able
to get my hands on any spare components to swap anytime soon, so it
looks like I'll have to buy replacements blind.
My working theory is that when the PSU died, it took the motherboard
and possibly other things with it. I'm planning on buying a
replacement motherboard, but I was wondering if anybody had any advice
before I did this, e.g. will I definitely have to replace the CPU and
memory? I'm planning on replacing this machine altogether in a few
months, so I really don't want to waste money buying bits for this
machine if I don't have to. On the other hand, I'd rather not waste a
week swapping out a piece at a time, so if it's 95% certain
something's dead, I'll just replace it straight away.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
