Can any one offer suggestions on getting scan disk to finish and getting out
of loop? Same thing in defrag/ How do I get it to finish?

Run them both in safe mode.

Presuming 98/ME not XP, boot into safe mode & run from there or hell
might just freeze over before it finishes.

Right. Safe mode is "one" way to temporarily disable most background
apps. Wont disable your screen saver tho in win9x at least. You know how
many people have them set for one minute?

Yeah - I hate that. I have over 35 users at work and when they have problems
I come running in and start working on things, and that d*** screen saver
pops up so quick I want to PUKE! <g>

As Lan admin, you could set a policy on the workstation to default to

My last gig was particular about not allowing clients to bring their
own things in from home including screen savers. If the test group
hadn't passed an application, screen or hardware device it wasn't
allowed.
But then again we had several thousand nodes in Metro alone and they
are a Canada wide financial institution.
My 2 cents,

Our company's policies are the same...but it's amazing what gets installed
when I'm not looking <g>! Then they scream when the systems slow down,
crash, etc. One of the users has this ugly purple ape thingy on her desktop
that talks to her...I'd like to choke them both - the ape AND the user.

I had a really cool manager. When I was hired he explained a few
things to me.
1. When you working at someone's desk, someone else will always come
up and say "while your here" to which I should politely tell them how
to call the help desk and logg a trouble ticket.
2. We had relationship managers that made sure the clients and support
group both understood the SLA. Anything not covered in the planned
support agreement cos extra.
It can be difficult to implement this arrangement if the clients have
had free run for a long time so a lot depends on the SLA and the tech.
support infrastructure, such as a manager who backs you up when you
follow their directives.
