And your friend's PC is using what operating system?

1) Assuming that it's a laptop not a desktop. (Dimensions and Optiplexes
don't have a button to do that)
2) He wants to increase the contrast, not the brightness.

Brightness and contrast for a Dell monitor will usually be controlled by an
OSD (On-Screen Display) menu, accessed by pressing one of the buttons on the
monitor itself. This assumes your friend has a desktop PC and monitor,
rather than a laptop.

Can you get details of which monitor / laptop your friend is using?

Try diferent themes until you find one that looks good to "your friend".
ps The magnifier in Accessories is a help for people with eyesight
problems, also Firefox and Thunderbird with their font enlarging
capabilities.
