Disabling Automatic Virus Scanning
Posted by Armchair Einstein on October 11th, 2004

Hello all.

I have a "company-isssued" laptop that is driving me nuts.

It is a P4 maching with XP Pro. It has Symantec Antivirus client installed.
All updates and automatic scanning is controlled by my corporate office.

As lame as it sounds, they have this laptop set up to do a FULL system scan
EVERY DAY at NOON. Every day at noon my computer becomes very sluggish and I
have to reboot in order to get it to stop scanning. Needless to say, this is
a big interruption every single day.

I've asked them if this can be changed and they've told me that there is "no
way" to change it.

I doubt this is the case. Is there a way to adjust the time it scans on my
end?

go into your task scheduler. start>>programs>>tools>>system
programs>>scheduler.. there should be a task in there called "scan my
computer (or something like that)" right click>>properties>>uncheck the
activated box (bottom left hand corner)...

deactivate the task as in my last post just use the time plan tab under the
tasks properties to ajust the task-timings..

oh.... after reading your post again (and before you coming back saying i
need a password to set changes) ..... if your firm did everything correctly
you are going to need to know the local administrators PW for that machine
or at least administrative priveliges or it won't work..

week.
There must be something in the registry or somewhere that I can fiddle with.

I told you how in my first post (deaktivate the box)... other than that...
your up shit stream... if your firm does everything properly you shouldn't
even be able to get in the registry, let alone edit it. there are other
ways to get around things but shouldn't be discussed at this point seeing as
the laptop is not your property. there is not that user policy on that
machine for nothing. it either has to work the way i told you or you will
have to put up with it (as too much hacking could mess up your and the firms
work). try telling your IT manager or boss at the firm that your work is
being delayed for over an hour every day due to the norton scan

In article <10mlrrmcsjkfq18@corp.supernews.com>, Armchair Einstein
says...
done at that time.

Supposing you disabled it. You get a virus which affects other
computers on the companies network. What do you think your long term
job prospects are going to be when you finally admit to tampering?
